Don’t fall in love with the Brooklyn Village plan proposed by BK Partners, the respected developer team chosen by Mecklenburg County commissioners last week to develop 17 acres of county-owned land in Uptown that is now home to Marshall Park, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Education Center and Bob Walton Plaza.
It’s a historic piece of property, and the implications are big. It was once the heart of the black community before being razed in the 1960s in the name of urban renewal. This is an opportunity for the community to rebuild a vibrant Second Ward and for a developer to create a legacy project in the center of the Queen City.
